A Stranger Gave Me 15k for Food :)

This happened sometime beginning of this year. I had just shifted my bank. Due to some verification matters my new HDFC account went non functional. I didn’t have a cheque book, my family was in Canada and all my money was in the HDFC bank from which I wasn’t allowed to withdraw  yet, due to verification reasons. In short, I was with Rs. 75 in my purse. I felt shy asking for money from friends - even from family, so I knew I had to find a way out. Suddenly I remembered my dad keeping some money for me in Muslim Bank in Pune, just in case of emergency. I did not know the account number as the details were in Pune home which was locked. So I had no proof that I hold an account. No pass book, no cheque book.  However I took a chance, because if anybody believes in miracles, it is me :)

I found a branch of Muslim Bank far away in town side of Mumbai. I went there and told them, I have an account with Muslim Bank, Pune, but I have nothing to prove it. My parents are in Canada, my HDFC is not functional and I need money for food and other basic necessities.

One man said, just having your name won’t help you withdraw money anywhere in the world.  Another guy Vasim Bagwan overheard this. He said, how much would you like to withdraw. I said at least 15k for now. He said, go to the cash counter and take it. I was confused, as I had still not given him my name.

However I thought after I take the cash, he’ll finish some procedure. I took the money and told him what do I do now? He said nothing. You can go home. I was like, what? He said yes, you need the money, that’s from my account, you can go. I said I can’t do that. He said return it whenever you have it. For now you need it. And I did.

I asked him for his phone number and name. He wrote it down on a paper and gave it to me. And I left not knowing what to say or how to thank.

I realized after leaving, he never asked for my name or my phone number. I WhatsApped him saying I don’t know how to Thank You. He said I was helped by someone when I needed help. So it’s my clear cut duty to help some one now.

  2. While I am really glad that this guy helped you, but all that needed to be done was a verification with your govt. Issued photo ID and your signature if the account was on your name and you could have withdrawn cash through withdrawal slip. In both banks, HDFC and Muslim Bank

    1. You think I did not try the procedures Neha? And in the end I remember the kindness that gave me the money I needed, not the procedures :) Stay blessed.
